The death of the young girl is one of many drownings that occurred off the Cork Coast in recent weeks.

Jack O'Sullivan was 14 years old when died while swimming with friends in Passage West on the 24th of August.

On the 20th of August there were two deaths during an Ironman event in Youghal. Ivan Chittenden from Canada and Brendan Wall of Meath died in separate incidents in the swimming leg of the race.

Speaking to RedFM News, Local Councillor Seamus McGrath says there's been too many tragedies in the water recently:

"There's a huge sense of disbelief. You know that we have a further tragedy into the lower harbor area. In the past few weeks now we've had, unbelievable, unimaginable number of tragedies where young people have lost their lives. So there's this huge sense of shock and disbelief, of this really, really unthinkable tragedy that has occurred again in Fountainstown."
