The City's Lord Mayor has expressed her shock at a stabbing incident in the city last night which has left a man in a critical condition in hospital.
The incident occurred at approximately 7.30pm on Grand Parade, with a man in his mid 20s rushed to Cork University Hospital.
Gardai arrested a man in his early 20s where he is being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
The Lord Mayor has previously said she doesn't feel safe walking the streets of the city by night and tougher action needs to be taken to clamp down on anti social behaviour.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris is to attend the city's Joint Policing Committee meeting next week and this latest incident along with the open drug taking on the city's streets will be raised with him.
Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show Lord Mayor Cllr Deirdre Forde says there needs to be more gardai on the beat in the city.
"It's horrendous, it frightens everybody.
"Again, it's the small few people who take the decision that ruins lives, and ruins families, and it causes grief for people.
"The businesses work so hard, they try to keep their staff safe in the city centre. This sends a shiver down everybody's spine. We've just got to get tougher, and I've course I'm calling all the time for more Gardai."
