The findings from the latest Irish Business Against Litter survey for last year deemed Mahon as ‘heavily littered’.
Lord Mayor Cllr Deirdre Forde said the classification of the city as "littered" does not reflect the hard work and dedication of City Council’s street sweeping crews
In a statement she pointed out that the IBAL survey is a snapshot of particular selected areas of the City based on two surveys a year.
However she conceded that despite the Council's and community groups best efforts, a number of areas continue to be problematic in terms of litter and dumping, such as some parts of Mahon.
The Lord Mayor says significant resources have been allocated and engagement with local communities to tackle littering, dog fouling and illegal dumping in the area while a major clean-up operation costing €50,000 was conduced last year in the Ringmahon area.
Her statement concluded by reiterating the Council's continuing role in the upkeep of the public realm but says an element of personal responsibility must be brought to bear to resolve the scourge of littering and illegal dumping.
