The City's Lord Mayor says the long running saga of the Events Centre is embarrassing but the city needs the project to come to fruition
His comments comes as the developer has applied for a 5 year extension in planning permission for the venue on South Main Street
It means BAM, which says it is committed to delivering the project, would have until 2030 to build the 6000 capacity venue if the extension is approved.
Speaking to RedFM News Lord Mayor Cllr Dan Boyle says the delays to the project have been frustrating but it will be a game changer for Cork
"It's a source of huge frustration that we haven't been able to bring this over the line, and the way it has made the costs higher and questions about the viability and the need for further Government support. But if we get this part of the process right, it should remove the remaining uncertainty. It's needed for Cork, and when it's up and running, it'll be a huge important piece of social as well as economic infrastructure for the city"
