Major upgrades to the Haulbowline Naval Base were officially opened by the Minister for Defence yesterday.
The works included a €4.2 million refurbishment of a 19th century accommodation block, which can house 70 live-in Naval Service personnel stationed at the Naval Base.
The €3 million Spencer Jetty was also opened yesterday.
The jetty will increase berthing capacity in Hawlbowline.
Block 8 is included on the Cork County Council Record of Protected Structures and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) rates it as a building of regional importance.
Seven more projects, costing an estimated €76 million are planned for the base.
