The man who cannot be named for legal reasons appeared at Cork District Cork this afternoon.
Garda Paul Dromey of Anglesea Street Garda Station told the court that Gardaí intercepted a van in Mahon on Wednesday night and saw a woman struggling in the passenger seat while holding an infant.
The driver of the van attempted to evade capture and rammed several Garda and Armed Response Unit vehicles before leaving the area and driving the wrong way down the Mahon slip road.
The van was eventually brought to a stop with the use of a stinger device on Carrs Hill and the man was arrested.
Six children aged 5 months to 10 years were in the van. None of the children were injured, however two Gardaí were injured and taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment. Gardaí said the children and woman were traumatised by the incident and are now at a secure and undisclosed location.
Garda Dromey told the court that Gardaí have strong objections to bail due to the seriousness of the charges.
The man faces nine charges including breaching a protection order and false imprisonment.
Garda Dromey said there was also a large number of Garda witnesses and other witnesses.
He also said the man had violently resisted arrest.
Judge Colm Roberts was told that Gardaí believe the man would carry out similar serious offences if granted bail and that the woman and children are in fear of the man.
Judge Roberts remanded the accused in custody to appear in court again on October 6th via video link.
