A 37 year old man has been remanded in custody after a passenger in the car in which he was travelling died following a two-car crash in Fermoy on Saturday evening.
Iulian Lotca of Main Street, Carrigtwohill, Co Cork appeared at Mallow District Court this morning
The incident happened on the Cork side of McCurtain street, Fermoy at around 8:40 on Saturday evening.
A 29-year-old Ukrainian national living in Fermoy who was a passenger in one of the cars was taken to Cork University Hospital in a critical condition.
A woman in her 50s in the other car was also taken to CUH with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s at the scene.
Garda Press confirmed last night that the 29-year-old passenger had passed away from his injuries.
The accused stands charged with dangerous driving causing death, driving with excess alcohol, and driving with no insurance.
Detective Garda Denise Fitzgerald told the court that Gardaí were objecting to bail due to the seriousness of the charges and said Gardaí feared that the Moldovan national would attempt to abscond if granted bail.
When asked by his solicitor if he would surrender his identity documents to Gardaí, the accused answered via an interpreter that friends of his have his passport as he had received a loan from them.
Judge Colm Roberts said he could not ignore the strength of the case and acknowledged that Lotca is in a state of shock.
He remanded Lotca in custody to appear in court again tomorrow (Tuesday) via video link.
