A man accused of dragging his 82-year-old grandmother down a flight of stairs two days before her death has been remanded in custody after Gardaí objected to bail.

38-year-old Brian Nnamdi Ogbo of Garrydhu Drive, Kilmoney, Carrigaline, appeared at Cork District Court this afternoon where he was charged with assault causing harm.

Detective Tom Delaney said Brian Nnamdi Ogbo’s mother called 999 on Sunday and said her son was attacking her and her mother.

The court heard the family said Ogbo suffers from Schizophrenia and had produced a knife in the course of the argument.

He is then alleged to have broken into the bathroom of the house and dragged his grandmother down the stairs.

82-year-old Stella Nnamdi died at Cork University Hospital on Tuesday.

The detective said the accused- who is originally from Nigeria and is alleged to have travelled here on false documents - is a flight risk.

Judge Mary Dorgan remanded Ogbo in custody to appear before the court again via video link on the 6th of March.
