A middle aged woman was left in critical condition and required surgery at CUH after she was stabbed at Glen North in Banteer.

56 year old Laszlo Nemeth with an address in Cork was charged with assault causing harm to a woman in her fifties and to a younger man, and of being in possession of a fishing knife and an axe.

Nemeth required a translator in court and made no reply when the charges were put to him.

The case was delayed due to a shortage of Hungarian interpreters, forcing Gardaí had to ask a member of the Hungarian community with excellent English to interpret for them.

Judge Joanne Carroll granted free legal aid and remanded the accused in custody to appear before Mallow District Court on the 11 of January.
