A man convicted of murder in Cork has become the first prisoner in Ireland to die with Covid-19.
John Walsh who was originally from Ballinlough was serving a life sentence in the Midlands Prison following his conviction in 2010 for the murder of 25-year-old John McManus at the victim’s flat in Wellington Road in the city.
56 year old John Walsh, had been receiving treatment for an underlying terminal condition and it is unclear whether he contracted Covid in hospital or in the prison. The Irish Prison Service confirmed there has been a death in custody, which occurred on Monday and say the cause of death will be determined by the Coroners Office.
