A man who was previously convicted of the rape and manslaughter of a woman has been jailed for eight and a half years for attacking a mother and her son with a clawhammer.

38-year-old Ian Horgan formerly of The Hermitage in Macroom and Ballincollig appeared at Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.

Ian Horgan pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to 29-year-old Hassan Baker and 66-year-old Mary O'Callaghan at MacCurtain Villas on the 26th of March last

The court heard that after changing his clothes in a derelict shed close to the scene of the assault, Horgan knocked on the door of the house and pushed past Mary O'Callaghan before hitting her and her son with the claw hammer.

He then choked Hassan Baker and hit him again. Baker's injuries included a fractured skull and cheekbone and damage to his eye socket- he underwent surgery following the attack and struggled with PTSD, speech problems and nightmares.

His mother suffered a fractured hand and multiple bruises.

Det Supt Michael Comyns said Horgan filmed videos of the pair as they lay injured on the ground and sent them to his girlfriend. He then left the country for four months before returning to Cork.

Horgan was previously jailed for 12 years for the rape and manslaughter of 22 year old Rachel Kiely in Ballincollig in 2000.
