A man who allegedly admitted his heroin deals were responsible for what a judge described as an “epidemic of overdoses” in Cork has been remanded in custody.

30-year-old Josh McGuinness of no fixed abode but originally from Harmonstown Road in Raheny in Dublin appeared before Cork District Court today.

Josh McGuinness was charged with four counts including being in possession of cocaine and diamorphine, or heroin, for his own use and for sale and supply when he was stopped in Cork city centre yesterday.

Detective Garda Derry O’Brien said McGuinness had made certain admissions in relation to knowing that deals being sold were to blame for a spike in overdoses in the city over the past week.

Defence Solicitor Eddie Burke said that his client suffers from serious mental health issues and sees a doctor every two weeks.

Judge Dorgan remanded McGuinness in custody to appear before the court again on December 20th next.
