The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Danny Collins, has extended his "very deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Tom Meaney" on behalf of the people of Cork County and on behalf of Cork County Council.
In a statement to RedFM News, the mayor said Mr Meaney served on Cork County Council "as a highly respected" Councillor and was elected to Dáil Eireann in 1965.
He added that Mr Meaney "was deeply passionate about public service and sustained this passion throughout this life after politics where he remained active in his local community through both the GAA and his local athletic club in Millstreet."
