Construction work at the popular tourist spot is already underway and is expected to be completed by 2025 in time for the distillery’s 200th anniversary.
Operators Irish Distillers say the distillery will be completely transformed and will feature new shops, a bar and café as well as restaurants.
Speaking to RedFM News, director of the Midleton Campus David Byrne says the distillery can be one of Cork’s leading attractions:
"It is an ambitious target but at the moment we welcome in the region of 150,00 visitors every year from countries including the States, France, Germany, the UK and indeed Ireland itself- all being amongst the top five. We believe Midleton Distillery has what it takes to attract greater visitor numbers each year. It's a big site, we've got lots of very interesting whiskey brands, we have a great team. We believe that it fundamentally has the ability to welcome 200,000- in fact more than that."
