Alcohol Action Ireland say minimum alcohol pricing will help to reduce pressure on Emergency Departments at hospitals across the country.
New rules introduced from today will see the cost of a slab of 24 cans almost double to €40.
The price of a bottle of wine will start at €7.40 while a 700ml bottle of whiskey will cost at least €22.
The charity says three people die from alcohol related illnesses every day and alcohol harm costs the country around €3.6 billion a year.
