Cork will see more GPs coming on stream but it will take another four years.
The number of GPs in Cork is falling despite population growth with those in the profession struggling with long hours and difficulties securing holiday and sick cover.
Calls have been made for better supports to be given to those working in general practice.
Speaking to RedFM News, Blackpool based Dr John Sheehan says more GPs than ever are in training to tackle the falling numbers and upcoming retirements.
"The number of people undergoing GP training in Cork has increased by nearly by 35% this year. That will take approximately four years before they are out in the community but our recent figures have shown that all graduates from the Cork GP training scheme, by in large, are staying in Cork and Kerry and servicing the community in which they train."
