MTU's Cork campuses will remain closed tomorrow Wednesday as the university assesses the situation.
In a statement this evening, MTU say their IT security systems were able to detect the breach at an early stage and are currently looking into solutions to allow teaching to return to normal as soon as possible.
The university says they have robust contingency plans in place and that core systems including email, HR, finance and payroll have not been affected by the breach.
A spokesperson for MTU says they have been in close contact with relevant authorities and stakeholders including the Higher Education Authority and the Department of Further and Higher Education.
The statement also says that student counselling services are continuing to operate and that support is also being extended to staff.
