Professor Maggie Cusack was speaking as the investigation into a major IT breach at the university continues.
Students returned to lectures on Monday following the attack over the previous Bank Holiday weekend, with MTU confirming on Sunday that data from their servers has been published on the dark web.
Higher Education Minister Simon Harris told the Dáil that students and staff impacted by the breach are due to be contacted by letter shortly.
