The MTU student union president says she fears that a large number of students will be forced to drop out of college due to the cost of accommodation.
Isobel Kavanagh says they are being contacted by an increasing number of students who say they may be forced to leave their course as they can't afford to rent in the city.
New figures from the Residential Tenancies Board show rents in the city reached an average of over €1,450 a month in the first quarter of this year.
A number of student accommodation buildings are being constructed at the moment, however concern has also been raised that not enough are available for the upcoming college year.
The Department of Further and Higher Education says there are around 5,000 bed spaces in purpose built student accommodation in the city with a further 1,000 expected to come on stream in 2022.
Speaking to RedFM News, MTU SU President Isobel Kavanagh says affordability is a huge issue for students:
"So we know that there is student accommodation available, but from our own research of the student accommodation, they're actually ranging from €250 per week to €265 per week."
