There's been a broad welcome to the news that the elective hospital in Cork will be located at Sarsfield Court in Glanmire.
The €100 million elective hospital will have nine surgical theatres and between 400-600 beds.
The Government says the development of elective hospitals will change the way in which day case, scheduled procedures, surgeries, scans and outpatient services can be better arranged across the country, ensuring greater capacity in the future and help to address waiting lists.
This morning the preferred sites of St Stephens Hospital at Sarsfield Court and Merlin Park, Galway are to be brought forward to the planning phase
The Cork centre with nine planned theatres, seven endoscopy suites and nine minor operation rooms is expected to provide 180,000 extra procedures, treatments and diagnostic appointments per year.
