New report finds almost half of people who took their own lives in Cork had alcohol in their system

A new report has found that almost half of people who took their own lives in Cork had alcohol in their system

The report by the Health Research Board examined the impact of the wide availability and affordability of alcohol

It also found that three quarters of the population in Ireland live within 300 meters of a licenced premises

Alcohol use is the 8th leading cause of death in Ireland with one person dying every day due to alcohol-related liver disease

Speaking to RedFM News Mick Devine an addiction counsellor with the Tabor Group says the report found that alcohol remains very affordable in Ireland

"I also notice in the report that it has not kept pace with rising prices of, you know, regular foodand drink products, the rate of inflation, and alcohol prices is much lower than. So, alcohol  remains very available, and very affordable in Ireland"
