Work to install new security scanners at Cork Airport is expected to begin at the end of next summer.

The ‘C3’ scanners which have already been installed in Dublin Airport are designed to allow passengers to pass through security without needing to remove electronics or liquids from their bags.

The European Commission is currently investigating the performance of the C3 scanner which has resulted in the temporary return of cabin baggage rules.

Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy Managing Director of Cork Airport Roy O’Driscoll outlines the timeline for the installation of the scanner:

"We have shortlisted contractors so we're now just doing our detailed design we look to commence the works towards the tail end of the next summer. Every technology seems to get smaller and lighter except for security equipment that gets bigger and wider and heavier so we can fit them in the current footprint that we have to build a mezzanine floor, so we'd again, hope to commence that at the end of next summer and then finish it by December."
