A New York firefighter who was on duty during 9/11 has arrived in Cork after a three-day charity cycle.

It is the first time Michael Schreiber hasn’t been at Ground Zero on the anniversary of the hijacking of the twin towers 23 years ago.

New York and Irish Firefighters set off from Dublin on Sunday and will arrive at the Garden of Remembrance near Kinsale later today.

Speaking to RedFM News, Michael Schreiber of the New York Uniformed Firefighters Association says the pain of 9/11 will never leave him:

"This is the first time in 23 years that I will not be at Ground Zero today. But I can't think of a better place I would be than participating in this ride and supporting our members. I was a probie, my class hadn't even graduated, I lost 6 members of my class in 9/11 who didn't graduate, so it's a horrific member for everyone."
