There is currently no legal way to hold a public vote to change a placename.
That's according to today's Echo, which is reporting that the brakes have had to be put on the City Council's plan to rename Angelsea Street.
The Department informed the council that, because of a issue in the 2001 Local Government Act, there is no way to go the public to get their opinion on the proposal.
Councillors decided to rename the street as MacSwiney’s St after the former Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney and his family.
MacSwiney was arrested by British forces for 'Sedition' 102 years ago yesterday.
