The number of children in emergency accommodation in Cork has risen 40% in the past twelve months - at 145.
Nationally, 10,568 men, women and children were forced to resort to emergency accommodation on that week - up 30% in twelve months - making it the highest monthly national figure on record.
That's according to the Monthly Homelessness Report for July 2022, which was published this afternoon by the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage.
The Department's figures detail the people using emergency accommodation during the last week of July.
Over that period, there were 491 adults in emergency accommodation across Cork city and county - that's a jump of 5% since June, and of 19% in twelve months.
145 children were in emergency accommodation in Cork - a rise of 40% in the past year.
The number of women in emergency accommodation in Cork & Kerry has increased by 32% in twelve months to 191.
The total number of people in emergency accommodation in the Cork and Kerry region went up 23% in twelve months.
The 491 adults in emergency accommodation in Cork is 10% higher than the pre-pandemic monthly peak of 447 adults in October 2019, and matches the post-pandemic monthly peak of 491 adults this past February.
In a statement to RedFM News, Cork Simon says that "these figures are particularly worrying in the context of a housing crisis that continues to worsen - housing supply is at an all-time low, [while] rents are at an all-time high; [and] the cost of housing is beyond the reach of an increasing number of people."
