Sinead O'Leary was stabbed over 20 times and her friend Nichola Sweeney was killed after Peter Whelan broke into Nichola's house in Rochestown on April 27th 2002.
Whelan was arrested outside the house that night and was handed a life sentence for murder with a 15 year sentence for attempted murder to run consecutively.
Sinead O'Leary told The Irish Examiner that the commencement of the Parole Act 2019, which contains the provision of a 12 year minimum term for a life sentence and ensures victims have more of a role in the parole process, would give victims and their families years of peace before they have to deal with the justice system.
