The organisers of the Ironman in Youghal say sea conditions were safe for the swim to take place on Sunday.
In a statement to RedFM News in the past hour, Ironman say their utmost priority is the safety of their athletes and all others involved in the event.
Triathlon Ireland last night revealed that their own on-site officials refused to sanction the event due to the adverse conditions.
Iron Man say their officials and specific on swim safety team carried out all standard safety protocol checks that are completed at every race and determined the conditions were safe for the swim to take place.
The statement says a decision was made however to shorten the distance of the swim due to the prevailing weather conditions.
The shortening of the swim was done as a further precaution to ensure kayaks, lifeguards and medical boats could be concentrated over a smaller area, while also allowing participants to swim with the help have a more favorable current and incoming tide after the first 100 meters.
Ironman concludes the statement by saying their thoughts continue to be with the family and friends of Ivan Chittenden and Brendan wall.
The group said they are providing ongoing assistance to their families and will continue to offer them support during this difficult time.
Triathlon Ireland told RedFM News that they have no further comment to make today, while Cork County Council which is one of the event sponsors has also been contacted for comment.
