Over 2 and a half thousand people took part in a rally organised by the Irish Farmers Association in Bandon last night

The demonstration by farmers is to highlight their opposition to any changes to the nitrates derogation.

If the current limit is reduced it would restrict the number of animals that can be kept on farms meaning farmers would have to reduce the amount of livestock they own.

The IFA say that inflation and the rising cost of living is already having an impact on smaller farmers and any further changes to the nitrates derogation could drive them out of the industry.

Speaking to RedFM News, John Murphy of the IFA says the rally that ran from Bandon Mart to Bandon Co-op last night was a success, but they won't stop there:

"We are going to keep this thing in the news, because the decision is going to be made in September on this section of it. And the whole thing is up for review again next year. There's a review of the Derogation in 2024, and it expires in 2025 so it has to be renewed in 2025 - so this thing is not going away".
