The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation say the level of overcrowding at Cork University Hospital today is among the worst ever recorded at the hospital.

There are 74 people waiting for a bed in the hospital’s Emergency Department- just 10 less than the all time high of 84 patients who were forced to wait for a bed at the hospital on the 15th of February this year.

CUH is the most overcrowded hospital in the country for the second day in a row, with 63 patients on trolleys in the E.D. yesterday.

Speaking to RedFM News, Colm Porter from the INMO in Cork says today’s figure is simply unacceptable:

"This kind of level of demand is what you'd expect to see in a worst case scenario in the depths of winter, and not on the 21st of July. But it's not just today, it's the sheer persistence of overcrowding we're experiencing. This level of overcrowding in Cork and indeed across the country is not normal and should not be treated that way."
