Passenger numbers at Cork Airport dropped by half last year after the pandemic led to restrictions on international travel and the closure of the airport for two months to allow for runway upgrade works
Traffic on our roads is still below pre-Covid levels and bus and rails journeys are all well below levels seen in 2019
These numbers are contained in the latest Transport Bulletin published by the CSO.
The CSO figures show that that the number of private cars on the roads outside of Dublin in mid-December was 8.5% lower than the same period the previous year
Across the 12 months of last year the CSO said the number of cars on the road corresponded closely with the restrictions in place at the time.
In relation to public transport the numbers also remain far below pre-Covid levels with rail journeys last month just over half of pre-Covid levels while the number of bus journeys outside Dublin in mid December were 76% of pre-Covid levels.
At Cork Airport passenger numbers in 2020 dropped by 80% on 2019 figures - when the airport had been flying high with 2.6 million passengers - while last year just over 255,000 passed through the doors of the airport
The CSO says the Bulletin will be updated regularly to guage the impact of Covid 19 on transport in Ireland
