Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan have struck gold at the Olympics in Paris.
The Skibbereen rowers came in first place in the lightweight mens double sculls final.
They have retained the title since winning gold in Tokyo 2020 and bring Team Ireland’s medal tally to 5 so far this year.
Speaking to RedFM news, Skibbereen Rowing Club Coach Denise Walsh says it was amazing to witness the win:
"Really excited. They won by dominant, clear border. It was super exciting. I think they look relieved and everything. And I think it's nice to finish on a high; that's the last of the Olympic racing in lightweight. So, yeah, they did it amazing. So special to be here
There's an electric atmosphere in Skibbereen, where friends, family and fans of Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy watched the rowers win gold.
Paul's aunt, Phil Hurley says she can't believe he's made history by winning medals at three Olympic Games:
"Words can't describe it, absolutely thrilled for them, and thrilled for Skibbereen, for the rowing club, for all the coaches, for all the rowers past and present. They've all contributed in their own way to this day, and to think like that Paul has made history is just amazing
