Penneys is moving ahead with their plans to nearly double the size of their store in Cork city.
The store on Patrick Street will not close during the expansion, which will take place on a phased basis.
The Irish Examiner reports that the O'Flynn Group - which has partnered with the retail giant to support the planned and development process - has confirmed that the planning application will be lodged today.
The expansion would see an additional entry point on Cook Street.
The news comes as Patrick Street was hit hard by closures in the past 12 months with the closure of Debenhams flagship store on Patrick Street along with Laura Ashley, Oasis and the upcoming losses off the street of Eason and Argos.
