Up to 30,000 people are living with the disease in Ireland, however many others are not aware they have it.
The Hepatitis C Partnership are encouraging people who think they may have the disease to get tested on today World Hepatitis Day, as many people develop cirrhosis of the liver and may need a transplant.
Those at risk include people who have shared equipment to inject or snort drugs as well as those who have had tattoos and piercings in unlicensed settings.
