Water temperatures can still be extremely cold this time of year.
That's according to the RNLI who say wearing a bright swim cap, a flotation device and a wetsuit are of vital importance when swimming in the sea.
The Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland are collectively warning people to be careful when near the coast or on the sea this bank holiday weekend.
Speaking to RedFM News, RNLI Water Safety Lead Kevin Rahill outlines what people can do if they get into difficulty.
" We'd also ask people to ask people to carry an alternative means of raising the alarm, a phone in a water proof pouch or a handheld VHF radio if they're going in a boat.
"It's also very important to tell people where you're going - so if you're not back by a certain amount of time after you said you'd be back, the person ashore can contact the emergency services and say they haven't turned up. We'd then have an idea of where they are and what they are doing."
