People are being urged to ensure their vaccinations are up to date as a measles outbreak has been confirmed in the South West region
Public health specialists says measles is a highly infectious disease and cases have been rising across Europe in recent months, so the increase is not unexpected
Earlier this month the HSE issued a public health alert following a confirmed case of measles at Cork University Hospital
Speaking to RedFM News Nicola Murphy, Specialist Registrar in Public Health Medicine for Cork and Kerry says there is an available vaccine for measles:
"If they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, they are adequately protected. I would urge anybody who isn't fully vaccinated at this point to go about arranging vaccination. There are many clinics being held throughout both Cork and Kerry. GP's are providing this vaccination for anybody who is eligible in their GP surgeries.
