As the mercury rises today , pet owners are being reminded that it is important to be vigilant for the signs of heatstroke in animals.
Temperatures are expected 24 degrees in some parts of Cork this weekend.
Emily Miller of Petmania says cats and dogs can become dehydrated and overheat very quickly in hot temperatures.
She is warning pet owners heatstroke in pets can prove fatal if untreated.
Speaking to RedFM News, Emily says there are signs to be mindful of:
"Things to look out for would be excessive panting, staggering, a sticky tongue or gums, vomiting, diarrhoea, anything like that. If you do notice any of those signs, it's really important to call your vet as soon as possible. In order to prevent it, we'd recommend that your pet has loads of water, that they have a shaded area to retreat into, that they are not left unattended in a car or sunroom or an area that can get very hot. If your dog or cat has lots of fur, a good brush through can help take out any excess hair as well, which can help cool them down. Make sure there's plenty of ventilation and really just stay vigilant so that your pet can enjoy the weather as much as you".
