Pharmacists say they want to be able to provide alternative antibiotics for patients with Strep A.
It follows a shortage in medicine containing penicillin - commonly used to treat the infection.
At the moment some patients prescribed penicillin-based antibiotics have been left waiting for a new prescription, which has delayed their treatment.
Annemarie Horan from the Irish Pharmacy Union says it's vital patients are treated for Strep A as soon as possible.
