Pipers traditional funfair at Kinsale is back in the news again after it was revealed that the County Council is looking for a €60,000 bond before it can return to the town
Owner Brendan Piper was issued with the demand after the town's car park on Pier Road was resurfaced at a cost of €140,000 and the bond is needed to cover any costs if the surface is damaged when the fairground is erected
Pipers, who have operated a funfair in Kinsale for 90 years, have since taken out rides that would need to be anchored to the ground and have purchased protective matting to cover the new surface
Brendan Piper met with Council engineers last Friday outlining the steps he has taken and seeking a reduction in the bond
Last year over 2,000 people signed a petition seeking the retention of the traditional funfair
Speaking to RedFM News local Green representative Marc O'Riain says the Council are refusing to budge on the matter and he now fears it could spell the end of Piper's long history in the town
"Brendan met with County Council engineers last Friday to see if they would reduce this bond price given all the mitigating issues. They have public indemnity insurance for the site and they have made commitments to remediate any issues after the fair comes out, but the Council are again not for moving, being totally intransigent. I just feel that the Council don't want Pipers in town"
