A planned all out strike of retained fire fighters has been called off.

The decision was made after seven hours of talks at the Labour Court between unions and management representing the service.

The service will continue to operate with a "half strike" until a formal hearing takes place next Monday.

It comes as 2000 retained fire fighters around the country are in a dispute over pay and conditions since the 6th of June.

Speaking to RedFM News, Karan O'Loughlin says a full strike would have been a complete disruption on the service.

"The first thing that would happen really is that it would put a lot more pressure on the full time fire service, because they would have to respond faster and to a lot more incidents than they would be capable of doing.

"There would be general disruption as there wouldn't be enough people on call to cover every single incident.

"All of the people on call were focused on ensuring threats to life were covered, and structure fires were covered, but beyond that anything else would have been very difficult."
