The Marina Market would be a huge loss to Cork City if it has to close.

That's according to Councillor Mick Finn after Cork City Council rejected a retention planning application and proposed plans to extend the market’s footprint.

CPR properties lodged an application to continue using the site as a market-food emporium and had planned to create a function space, coffee roastery and health and lifestyle shop, but was rejected by Cork City Council and the property company now have four weeks to appeal the decision with An Bord Pleanála.

Speaking to RedFM News, Councillor Mick Finn outlines why the market's planning application wasn't approved.

"There are concerns being expressed about the safety elements of the site, particularly the access to the Port of Cork Quays, Kennedy Quay,  and to do with traffic and parking.

"I think there are genuine issues there, but I suppose it came as a shock to all of us to hear that this could impact the future of the market and this was that's where I'm coming from.

"While I can acknowledge there are safety issues and there are planning issues, I think that we need to look at ways of solving those to ensure that the market can continue."
