Prison officers' fears around the dangerous level of overcrowding at Cork Prison has been raised at their annual conference.
Nearly every cell in the facility has been doubled up yet inmates are still sleeping on mattresses on the floor of cells.
Despite this there are no expansion plans for the facility.
President of the Prison Offices Association Tony Power says Cork Prison is one of the most overcrowded in the country;
"Cork which is the most modern full prison that has been built in the country in the last number of years.
That is 167 cells. Every one of those now are almost, except for a handful, are doubled up and Cork have often had up to 52 prisoners sleeping on floors."
