A protest to highlight the high number of vacant houses owned by Cork City Council will be held today at 1pm at Madden's Buildings in Blackpool.

There are currently more than 400 vacant Cork City Council houses and approximately 10 percent of the housing stock at Madden's Buildings is currently vacant.

The protest comes in the wake of reports at the weekend that there are now 413 people homeless in the city and county.

The protest will take place at the Watercourse Road entrance to Madden's Buildings and all members of the public are invited to attend.

The protest has been called by Solidarity public representatives Mick Barry TD and Cllr Fiona Ryan.

Speaking to RedFM Deputy Barry says people need to make their voices heard.

"I have no faith in the government to solve the housing crisis, and I have no faith in the Council to solve the housing crisis.

"We're only going to solve the housing crisis when we have a mass movement on the streets of this country the way that we did when we had the water charges.

"I hope that protests like he one in Blackpool today can point the way forward towards such a movement."
