The recovery of a record haul of drugs at Cork Port last month has sparked calls for an increase in naval patrols in Irish waters
Over €30 million euro worth of crystal meth, which gardai believe was destined for Australia, was seized at the port as it was being transported through Cork
Patrick Murphy of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation says it's vital that patrols are stepped up to stop drugs being channeled from Irish waters into mainland Europe
Speaking to RedFM News he says investment is needed in the naval service to ensure our waters are properly patrolled:
"We have a wide door open for these people to come in, in my view, because we don't have the sufficient resources being given to these hard working men and women in our naval services, to give them enough money to make it pay for them to give up a lot of their time and family life to be at sea the same as fishermen. And it's a disgrace what's happening."
