The Marine Casualty Investigation Board is calling for a Marine Notice to be issued on he requirements around safety training and the maintaining of fire detection systems after a trawler sank off the Cork coast last year
An investigation into the incident found that a charging electronic device was the likely cause of fire that sank the FV Horizon off the Old Head of Kinsale last May
A faulty smoke detector also allowed the fire to burn for a significant time before the crew became aware of it
Despite the crew's best efforts to bring the fire under control, the skipper made the decision to abandon ship and take to a life raft. They were safely picked up by the Courtmacsherry RNLI Lifeboat 40 minutes later
