A fresh report on a halting site in Cork has found that while conditions are improving, the pace of change is still not fast enough.
The Ombudsman for Children found last year that conditions at the unnamed site, though it's understood to be Spring Lane, described conditions for children at the site as "shocking" and deplorable".
There are 66 families living at the site and the initial report made 10 recommendations for action, all of which were accepted by the local authority.
The No End in Site report which was published in May last year found that there were 140 people using toilet and washing facilities designed for use by 40 people.
It also found that children suffered skin conditions and respiratory problems "at a much higher rate than the general population".
Residents at the site persistently have to deal with rodent infestation, inadequate sanitation, extreme overcrowding, and a high rate of childhood illness.
The Irish Examiner reports that a progress report published today, said significant steps had been taken by the local authority in the past 12 to 18 months to improve the living conditions of residents.
The Council has spent more than €450,000 on refurbishment and upgrading at the site in the past year, and is currently trying to purchase houses and identify existing stock suitable for the needs of families who wish to move offsite.
The local authority also plans to construct a further Traveller group housing scheme, with planning permission expected to be sought next year.
The Ombudsman for Children, Dr. Niall Muldoon says while he is satisfied with the work that has taken place his office will continue to engage with the Council and families to drive further change.
