"A generational catastrophe" that's how the ongoing rental crisis has been described
It comes as the latest Daft report shows that rents in Cork County have jumped up 14.6% on last years figures with city rents recording a 6.9% rise.
This is the 36th quarter in a row that rents have increased and housing charity Threshold says it's time the rental market was brought under control.
Threshold in Cork says families are really struggling to make their rent and many fear losing their homes and this is compounded with a lack of supply of rental properties across the city and county.
Speaking to RedFM News Edel Conlon says renters should always ensure that any rent hikes sought by their landlords are valid.
"We have cases coming to us in the Cork office where people are topping up rents, and paying rents that are above the that are permitted with the current legislation.
"It's important that people contact threshold and get their notices of rent reviews checked to see if they are valid, because 50% of the notices that come to our offices are invalid.
"It's important that people get the correct information about their rent increases."
