The strike committee representing retained firefighters in Cork will meet Fire Service management today to discuss the ongoing row over pay and conditions.

It's likely that Labour Court recommendations to end the dispute will be overwhelmingly rejected when a ballot of 2,000 firefighters takes place later this week.

The recommendations include increasing base pay by €3,000 to just under €12,000, however crews say it will not be enough to recruit and retain new staff.

SIPTU say the political will to provide resources to resolve the current issues isn't there and have described the Labour Courts recommendations as a "major disappointment."

Speaking to RedFM News, Station Officer at Midleton Fire Station Mark Sinclair says the job is not attractive to younger people.

"My own daughter was thinking of joining the job, but she's after getting a permanent job with an American company.

"She works a three cycle shift, absolutely no on call, not working weekends, and financially better off than what she would be in the retained fire service."
