The ribbon has been cut on the final stage of the Dunkettle Interchange Upgrade Scheme.
Tánaiste Micheal Martin officially opened the new 215 million euro road project, which is intended to alleviate congestion and improve safety.
The Dunkettle Interchange is the junction of four national roads: the Cork-Dublin Motorway, the Cork-Waterford/Rosslare road, the South Ring Road and the Dunkettle-city centre National Route.
Speaking to RedFM News, Chief Executive of TII, Peter Walsh says the project has reduced journey times by almost 50 per cent, despite traffic volumes through the interchange being at an all-time high:
"The improvements in safety and in efficiency is what the project immediately brings. But what it does unlock as well, is the ability to carry on to develop the N28 down to Ringaskiddy. That allows for the movement of the port out of the city and all of the knock-on effects".
