Richard Satchwell told Gardaí he stored his wife’s body in a freezer before burying her under concrete in their home, after she died while trying to stab him in the head with a chisel. The 57-year-old of Grattan Street, Youghal, has pleaded NOT guilty to the murder of Tina Satchwell at the same address in March 2017.
Outlining the case, prosecution barrister Gerardine Small told the jury Richard Satchwell maintained his wife had left their home while he was shopping in Dungarvan in Co Waterford in March 2017, when he was arrested and interviewed on the 10th of October 2023.Ms Small said he changed his story when he was re-arrested two days later following the discovery of a body under the floor of the Satchwell home in Youghal.
The jury heard he told Gardaí he had stored her body in a freezer in a shed at the back of the house before bringing it back inside the house, digging a grave, wrapping her body in black sheeting, putting her body in the grave and then cementing it closed.
Ms Small also said Richard Satchwell told Gardaí his wife had died as he held her weight off him with a belt during his efforts to protect himself.
