If you find yourself in difficulty while in the water, follow the 'Float to Live' guide.

The advice comes as thousands across Cork are expected to head to the seaside this weekend, as the mercury continues to rise.

Cork County Council and Water Safety Ireland are reminding sun-worshippers that lifeguards are on duty between half past ten in the morning and seven o'clock in the evening every day until the end of August, across the 12 life-guarded beaches in Cork.

Speaking to RedFM News, the RNLI's Water Safety Delivery Support Officer, Lisa Hollingham says it’s important that everyone, including children, know how to 'Float To Live':

"Although there is lovely, hot weather forecast, the water temperatures can still be cold. And one of our key messages is our "Float to Live" message. So if you find yourself in difficulty in the water, just lean back, float on your back, extend your arms and legs, and get your breathing under control for 60 to 90 seconds. And once you've done that you can formulate a plan and have a look around and decide what you're going to do next. If you can call for help. Or if you can swim safely back to shore".

Call 999 or 112 at any time and ask for the 'Coastguard' to raise the alarm.
